REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/25/2023 7:21 PMI think that sunsets and sunrises are things that we take for granted. There are so visually beautiful and like Thomas Berry says, can have lots of spiritual and religious influences. Additionally, whenever I take time out of my day to admire the sunset, I feel like it is a really great mental break to just pause and take a breather. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/25/2023 7:19 PMIn California I feel like there is a huge division between water rations. I know that there are lots of arguments between Central Valley residents and So Cal (specifically LA) residents. Personally, I feel that lots of water goes towards farming and agriculture and enforcing laws that prioritize planting crops and plants that use less water would be beneficial for everyone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/25/2023 7:16 PMYes, I feel that when I spend more time outdoors, my anxiety and stress levels lower. Especially now with it being final exam time, spending time outside reading, walking, listening to music, or just appreciating nature is so beneficial. I think that culture that prioritize spending time outside are happy and more in tune with themselves and the universe. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/25/2023 7:15 PMEspecially during this time of year, I find myself able to appreciate all the fall leaves turning bright orange, red, and yellow. When I walk I feel like I can soak in more of my surroundings and appreciate nature more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/16/2023 12:10 PMWe can limit the amount of stuff that we have. I went to multiple thrift stores today with my friends and they all bought stuff but I didn't because I knew that I didn't need anything more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/07/2023 12:34 PMDue to the fact that I live on-campus in a huge apartment building, I know that there is lots of electricity being produced by multiple people. This is connected to electronic devices, kitchen appliances, games, hair tools, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Vallon Bucayu-Lee 11/07/2023 12:33 PM- turn off the lights when you're not in the room
- try to carpool to reduce CO2 emissions from multiple cars
