Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 14

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

I think that is quite surprising with how car centric America is. I would put more in the budget.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Alistair Cahill's avatar
    Alistair Cahill 11/21/2023 6:37 AM
It addresses the cultural aspects of it and how some people want to eat local and not all people want to eat the same thing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Alistair Cahill's avatar
    Alistair Cahill 11/19/2023 3:12 PM
The process of getting more vegetables is much better for the earth then meat because you waste so much grain to feed the animals just to kill them to get meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Alistair Cahill's avatar
    Alistair Cahill 11/12/2023 4:34 PM
I normally bring Gatorade to school. I could substitute it for Gatorade packets instead of plastic bottles.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Alistair Cahill's avatar
    Alistair Cahill 11/10/2023 1:36 PM
Most commonly in rural areas or low income areas. Communities that are lower income, communities made mostly up of people of color, etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Alistair Cahill's avatar
    Alistair Cahill 11/10/2023 1:31 PM
There are lots of places to go to recycle electronics.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Alistair Cahill 11/09/2023 5:32 AM
All the people are a lot more noticeable when you're walking past instead of going 30 mph.
