I have been walking for several hours every day this week not to reach a destination, but rather in the pursuit of deer. This has no eco change of any kind as I am not replacing vehicle trips with emission free walking, but I do feel as if it has an impact on my overall wellbeing. I feel great. Also, I have not been using any running water as it does not exist up here with our aged and broken pumphouse, so that is (I think) providing a slight positive ecological impact. The water we do bring up here is generally in reusable 5 gallon plastic jugs, and we pour it directly to our canteens or hand washing 'faucet', so I think the impact is positive rather than negative.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

I am currently at my family's ranch in eastern Oregon, and all of the water for this property comes from several wells. All of the people who live on the mountain have a well (or several) that supplies their home with water. I am not sure how a multitude of wells can affect groundwater or other factors, but I would guess the wells are incredibly sustainable when compared to other forms of water production. I don't think anything needs to change.

That sounds very convenient, Garrett. I wonder how difficult it would be to incorporate similar systems into the city, so as to provide sustainable, clean, and processed water freely to people. Portland is known to have a multitude of watersheds and we also experience seasonal rain. I imagine these resources could be more utilized.

How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

When I am driving I don't experience much of anything because I am focused on safely operating a motor vehicle. As a passenger, I am quite observant. When I have free attention like when I am walking, I notice much more about my surroundings and have a more enjoyable journey.
