Jacob's actions
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/10/2023 4:20 PMCovanta operates a waste-to-energy facility in York. This facility serves the entire county and focuses on reducing waste and greenhouse has emissions. They work to keep waste out of landfills and also use this waste to create usable clean energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow do our current food growing and manufacturing processes affect our future and the future of Earth?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/10/2023 4:12 PMThe current processes create a good deal of greenhouse gases that negatively impact our environment. Also, industrial manufacturing processes contribute to polluting the air, ground, and water sources. The expanded land use of farming can also destroy animal habitats. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/05/2023 8:31 PMI am inspired to find alternatives to destroying the environment. I have seen the effects of oil spills on marine life in documentaries and would like there to be a solution to this happening in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/05/2023 8:28 PMI would carry the items out to my vehicle in a cart. Once there, I would use one of the bags that I probably just forgot ion my trunk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/05/2023 8:26 PMI learned that batteries are considered hazardous waste and are not supposed to be thrown away in regular trash bin. Also, paint that is still liquid is considered a hazardous waste product too. Small amounts left to dry out in cans can be left out for disposal or empty cans can be recycled with metal items.
I learned that there are 4 types of hazardous waste: ignitable, corrosive, reactive, and toxic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Jacob Delvecchio 10/05/2023 8:17 PMI can use reusable shopping bags, also not made of plastic, when I shop or need to carry any type of good with me. Also, using a reusable drink container and my own straw would help the environment as well.
It would also be a great idea for more than just the environment, to donate unused clothing to charities in need rather than leaving them to clutter up my room or throwing them away.
