Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I usually do a pretty good job of not using plastic straws at home, but when I go out to eat I or when I go to Starbucks I will accept a straw. I recently purchased a straw keychain and that has helped me say no more often. However, a lot of times it is hard because workers will hand me a straw without even asking if I want one. I am working on saying no more in those situations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I keep reusable bags in my car so that way I can avoid using disposable ones. If I am in a store and I forget to bring in my reusable bags, I try and carry what I can in my hands or just put items in my cart. I try my best to always use reusable bags, but every once in a while I forget and that is okay. As long I am trying, to me that is what is important.

    Nature
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

With walking, I am able to notice little details that I did not notice before. I feel more connected with nature and I feel less stressed then when I am driving.
