Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

My eco challenge has been going very well so far. I have been making sure to not use plastic straws if I get a drink from somewhere, and I have a metal straw as an alternative that I keep with me instead. I have also been turning off screens a lot lately when I finish or need a break from my homework. Instead of going on my phone or watching TV, I have been spending time with family. I have also started reading again before I go to bed since I have been prioritizing putting down my phone. One night I even went outside with my cousin and we ended up seeing the northern lights a little bit which was very cool. And I definitely would not have seen the northern lights if I sat on my phone all night.

How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

By walking around your neighborhood, you are able to see all the little details instead of driving past everything in a blur. When I go for walks in my neighborhood I am able to meet new neighbors that I may have never met before or haven't talked to in a while. I am also able to notice house decorations, which I really enjoy especially around the holidays. You can also become more familiar with the types of plants, trees, and animals in your neighborhood. I know I have found snail shells on the road near my house before which really shocked me because I never knew I would find a shell like that in a subdivision. I have also been able to see wildlife that you wouldn't normally get to see in your backyard like a fox, deer, and opossums.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Lately I have been trying to substitute plastic items with reusable items. For example, I use a refillable water bottle instead of plastic water bottles everyday. I keep a metal straw with me incase I go out to eat, that way I do not need a plastic straw. I also have a tote bag that I use when I go shopping instead of putting my items in plastic bags all the time. When I pack my lunches I use reusable containers that can be washed instead of plastic bags that get thrown away after each use.

I like the idea of taking a reusable straw with you when you go out to eat. I've never thought of that before.

Nov. 4th my family and I went out to dinner and I told them about my challenge. We all said no to a plastic straw that night and I was able to save 7 straws from ending up in the landfill!

This is great! My work has compostable paper straws but I think our communities are slowly becoming more eco friendly through the materials that they provide! I have also been seeing a lot less plastic bags in grocery stores which is amazing to see!

That's awesome! I can't remember the last time I used a single use plastic straw! Where I live, most places now are using paper straws and sometimes don't even provide straws. Sometimes those portable cutlery kits also come with a straw. I've also seen collapsible straws too!

What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

Instead of sitting at home on my phone, I went with my friend to go get ice cream at Culvers. We sat there for over an hour talking instead of going on our phones or other screens.

I haven't had much of a chance to complete my challenges due to the rain, but I have been able to get off my phone and spend time doing other hobbies. I also found a metal straw at my house that I am going to keep in my car to use in place of a plastic straw. That way if I stop somewhere and get a drink, I don't need to take a plastic straw and I can just keep reusing my metal straw that helps keep plastic out of the environment. This relates to our talk about plastic and how we can reduce the amount of plastic we use on a daily basis, and swapping plastic straws out is a good start to reducing my use of plastic.
