Catherine's actions
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 5 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 15 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 90 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 90 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 3:57 PMI found out that the electricity generated in my area primarily is powered by a power plant run on dual-fuel. However, we are also efficient on using other alternatives such as solar power, hydroelectric power, biomass, and wind power. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 3:45 PMJust by saying hello you can brighten someone's day and become more familiar with them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 3:41 PMCreativity is an important aspect in enforcing simplicity because it makes it easier to be more resourceful with what we have around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 3:32 PMMy favorite activity that is active is going on walks with my friends. I love chatting with them and time goes by so quickly especially when it is on a nice day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 3:30 PMUsing the reusable mug for coffee has been pretty great especially since most cafes will fill them up for you. This means I can still do my morning runs for little sweet treats without the guilt of waste after. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 7:45 AMI agree, humans were made to be connected with nature, and with all the modernization of everything it can be hard to find time to reconnect with our roots. When I was outside I was put in a better mood and was mindful and thankful for the world around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 7:38 AMI don't know if that is a fair comparison considering both doctors and farmers have such different jobs and benefactors that just can't be compared or decided on who should be paid more than the other. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 6:06 AMSince I live in the mountains we are very lucky to have mainly untouched pure water coming from downhill water. However, since this water has to go to other places it is important to be conscious about our water pollution because even though we have clean water those below us get stuck with all our contaminants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Catherine Hayes 12/12/2023 6:03 AMI regularly use plastic bags for food and whatnot, I could replace these with other containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Catherine Hayes 11/28/2023 5:46 AMYes, I could schedule some time with friends since most of us go to the same school and job.
