John's actions
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 25 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 5 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 2 person(s) who are in need each day.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Nature
Keep a Nature Journal
I will journal each day about my experiences in nature.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 10 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 13 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
John Clancy 12/04/2023 2:05 PMI usually dont take long showers, 10 minutes max so I set a timer to make sure that I did not go over 5 minutes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
John Clancy 12/04/2023 2:02 PMToday I worked with my landlord on her garden, planting some new native hawaiian plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?
John Clancy 10/09/2023 3:08 PMI chose to ride my bike to a restaurant instead of driving, and the experienced differed in that everything was slowed down and I was more able to appreciate my surroundings. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
John Clancy 10/09/2023 3:02 PMI believe that this assertion is correct, as it's better to eat healthy, unprocessed foods than to end up needing hospital services -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
John Clancy 10/06/2023 5:48 PMI found that in Hawaii, you cannot recycle the type of thin cardboard that has graphics, such as a cereal box and only corrugated cardboard is accepted. -
John Clancy 10/05/2023 6:12 PMI made this account today and realized how much I already do to be more sustainable by clicking I already do this on a lot of things
