  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

This speaks to how whole foods will lead to a healthier life and will cause you to need a doctor less.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Sometimes I may be in a place where I need water and all that is available is bottles. This can be at an event or social function.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I believe that this rings true to an extent. Being outside definitely helps us develop this. A culture that never goes outside will not have a proper care or understanding for the world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I can ask friends to come exercise with me, specifically to surf and do different workouts outside.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Living near the ocean and surfing every day, I see lots of different plastic waste that has either been littered by humans. There are also large amounts being dumped from landfills.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?

I'm not sure. I know that it comes from the city but not a specific body of water. I could look up the city of San Diego and research water sources for the area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Kyler Cooke's avatar

Electricity is generated from solar panels I believe that connect to my dorm. These are very sustainable and don't have large impact on the environment.

What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

I can unplug and turn off all lights every night.

Carrying my journal helped and I remembered to do it! It was honestly very fun to keep a nature journal regarding the moment and the things I am thankful for.
